A man at the downtown Denver jail attempted to escape Wednesday by hiding in a trash cart and running after the cart was dumped into a compactor.

Jose Torres, 30, allegedly attempted the escape but was caught shortly after he exited the compactor and tried to run off, according to an arrest affidavit.

Torres was in the intake area of the jail, awaiting processing on a failure-to-comply warrant, about 5:10 p.m. when he climbed into a large, wheeled trash cart and hid under a trash bag, the affidavit said. About 5:40 p.m., the cart was pushed into the trash compactor room, and its contents mechanically dumped into a compactor.

A jail worker spotted Torres falling from the cart and into the compactor, the affidavit said. Torres ran from the compactor but was caught and handcuffed. He was placed in an isolation cell and placed on investigative hold for attempted escape.
