AS MILLIONS of Americans are still waiting for updates on a fourth stimulus check payment, some schools are sending ‘thank you’ checks to teachers.

School districts in Tennessee, Texas, California, Colorado, and Georgia have approved $1,000 checks to boost morale among teachers.

Some critics say the move is not the best way to spend federal stimulus funding.

Only 12 states have approved spending plans as of yet for the $190billion in stimulus funds, a large percentage of which came from the American Rescue Plan.

Meanwhile, President Joe Biden and Congress are facing calls from millions of Americans to send another stimulus check worth up to $2,000 every month, however that prospect is unlikely.

  • FRUSTRATIONS RISE AS PEOPLE EXPERIENCE TAX REFUND DELAYS

There are major tax refund delays for many Americans because Internal Revenue Service (IRS) staffers are working remotely during the Covid-19 pandemic.

The annual report released by the National Taxpayer Advocate recently revealed that a whopping 35million tax returns were being held for reviews – and they are weeks behind schedule.

The backlog is a result of the pandemic restricting IRS employees from accessing the agency’s facilities because they’re all working remotely and dealing with a significant workload, reported WGAL.

  • TWELVE STATES APPROVED CHECKS FOR TEACHERS

In Berkeley, California, around $2.8million is being used to give teachers a 3.5 percent bonus ahead of the upcoming school year.

And in Florida, more than 170,000 teachers are expected to receive a $1,000 payment in their mailboxes in the coming weeks.

Schools have until 2024 to decide how they will spend stimulus funding, which totaled about $190 billion.

The funds will not be allocated until a plan for how the money will be spent is approved.

Only 12 state plans have been approved so far.

  • GEORGIA INITIATED STIMULUS FOR TEACHERS

Georgia was the first state to act, signing off on the payments in March.

Up to 35 percent of the state’s stimulus funding will be used to award  $1,000 checks to 230,000 school-level employees.

It covers not only teachers but aides, custodians, bus drivers, and cafeteria workers.

The plan will cost $230.5 million in total.

It will also be the largest amount of money taken from Georgia’s stimulus funding for any one project.

  • THANK YOU CHECKS SENT OUT TO TEACHERS

Schools handing out $1,000 “thank you” stimulus checks to teachers and staff has caused outrage as critics claim it is not the best way to spend the federal funding.

Districts in Tennessee, Texas, California, and Colorado, and the state of Georgia have approved the stimulus payments in what they say is a much-needed boost in morale for teaching staff.

They also claim it will prevent teacher resignations after a year of suddenly being forced to adapt to remote schooling and the uncertainty of returning to the classroom.

  • BILLIONS IN STIMULUS CHECKS REMAIN UNCLAIMED

Internal Revenue Service (IRS) records show that some people turned away or simply failed to cash 1,315,717 checks.

That’s $1.77billion of unclaimed stimulus from the first round of stimulus checks issued during former President Donald Trump’s fiscal response to the pandemic.

  • CHILD TAX CREDIT AMOUNTS INCREASED

Families will see six child tax credit payments enter their bank accounts before the end of the year.

Child tax credit payments have been extended from $2,000 to $3,600 as part of The American Rescue Plan.

Families with kids between the ages of six and 17 will receive up to $3,000.

Newborn babies can qualify for the full $3,600 as long as they are US citizens.

  • HAS A FOURTH STIMULUS CHECK BEEN PASSED?

Misinformation about a fourth stimulus check has spread on social media, but it’s a hoax.

“It passed 10 minutes ago! Everyone gets another stimulus check for $2500 on July 30, 2021. They did it!” read a July 15 Facebook post that has been shared hundreds of times, according to USA Today.

The Biden administration has not passed legislation about a fourth or future stimulus payments.

  • NANCY PELOSI SLAMS MITCH MCCONNELL ON COVID RELIEF

Earlier this month, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi slammed Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell for voting against Covid relief through the American Rescue Plan.

  • MCCONNELLL: AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN IS ‘TOO MUCH MONEY’

    Senate Minority Leader McConnell continued:

“If you add up the total amount that’ll come into our state: $4 billion… So my advice to members of the legislature and other local officials: Spend it wisely because hopefully, this windfall doesn’t come along again… We’ve floated entirely too much money.”

McConnell added that he thinks Democrats’ plans to spend trillions stimulating the economy is “wildly inappropriate” and thinks it will harm the economy in the long run.

“And that’s why the era of bipartisanship on this stuff is over,” he said.

  • WHAT DID MITCH MCCONNELL SAY ABOUT THE AMERICAN RESCUE PLAN?

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell made several critiques of the American Rescue Plan, which gave $4billion to his home state of Kentucky.

“It passed on a straight party line vote… So you’re going to get a lot more money,” McConnell said.

“I didn’t vote for it, but you’re going to get a lot more money. Cities and counties in Kentucky will get close to $700-800 million.”

  • NO REPUBLICANS VOTED FOR CHILD TAX CREDIT

Several Democrats have been reminding voters on social media that every Congressional Republican voted against the Child Tax Credit.

“The monthly #BidenChildTaxCredit payments of up to $300 for each of your children will make a big difference for your family,” House Speaker Nancy Pelosi wrote on July 14, one day before the first payments went out.

“But don’t thank a Republican. Every single Republican in Congress said ‘NO’ to sending that help to your family.”

  • TWITTER QUESTIONS IF DELTA VARIANT OF COVID WILL BRING ANOTHER STIMULUS CHECK

Some Twitter users are wondering whether or not the alarming rise of Covid-19 infections from the Delta variant could mean another round of stimulus payments might be on the way.

“With Delta variant concerns there’s a very large possibility we will see another multi trillion dollar stimulus package again,” one person suggested.

“So with the delta variant on the rise can we expect a 4th stimulus check?” another person asked, tagging the President and Vice President in their query.

  • WHAT DID THE TREASURY SECRETARY SAY ABOUT THE CHILD TAX CREDIT?

“For the first time in our nation’s history, American working families are receiving monthly tax relief payments to help pay for essentials like doctor’s visits, school supplies, and groceries,” said Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen in a statement.

“This major middle-class tax relief and step in reducing child poverty is a remarkable economic victory for America — and also a moral one.”

  • CREDIT WILL BENEFIT 27 MILLION KIDS

The child tax credit will reach approximately 27million children, including half of the Black and Latino community who did not previously get a credit, according to the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities.

“It’s going to target the folks who need the support the most,” said Joanna Ain, associate director of policy at Prosperity Now, a financial literacy nonprofit organization.

  • HILLARY CLINTON PRAISED CHILD TAX CREDIT

Hillary Clinton praised the new child tax credit on Twitter.

“Every child should have the chance to live up to their God-given potential, and every family should have the means to provide that chance,” she wrote.

“The Child Tax Credit will help,” she added, along with a link to info on the credits.

  • IRS WARNS OF SCAMMERS

Families who are eligible for child tax credits are being warned about scammers trying to steal their cash.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has urged households to be alert for criminals getting in touch by phone, email, text, or on social media.

The criminals claim they need to verify your information in order for you to get advance child tax credit payments.

Instead, it’s used “as a cover to steal your information and money”, the IRS tweeted recently.

  • WHAT DATES WILL THE CHILD TAX CREDITS GO OUT?

The first child tax credit check went out on July 15.

  • HOW TO TRACK YOUR CHILD TAX CREDIT PAYMENT

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has a child tax credit checker which you can use to track the progress of your payment.

It’s similar to the one you might have used to track previous payments such as stimulus checks and tax refunds.

Now that these payments have started, Americans will be able to use it to see their processed monthly payment history.

  • WILL THERE BE A FOURTH STIMULUS CHECK?

There are currently no plans for a fourth, fifth, or other continuing stimulus payments.

A letter to President Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris from 53 Representatives, led by Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, recently stated, “Recurring direct payments until the economy recovers will help ensure that people can meet their basic needs, provide racially equitable solutions, and shorten the length of the recession,” CBS Chicago reported.
